HISTORY

Pacific Seeds (Thai) was established in 1975.  As a business unit of continental grain, hybrid corn, sorghum, forage sorghum and sunflower were introduced from Pacific Seeds in Australia.  Those products were evaluated to identify elite hybrids for Thai market.

In 1979,       the tropical corn program was established in Thailand, a 16 ha farm at Koktoom was purchased and developed to be a research station to support all research activities required in doing seed business.

In 1981,       corn and sorghum hybrids were released which hybrid sorghum Pac 80 was becoming popular with farmers in Lopburi and Saraburi and this hybrid continues it popularity until now.

In 1984,       Introduction of forage sorghum hybrid was made to serve dairy and beef farmers to feed cattle with high quality grasses.  Jumbo, Superdan and Nutrifeed have become popular and well known in Livestock industry.

In 1985,       sunflower hybrid Pac 33 was promoted to farmers around Lopburi and Saraburi.  And it made this crop to expand into national level in few years later.  And Pac 33 becomes a leading hybrid with most preference among commercial hybrids in Thailand.

In 1987,      the export of corn seed to Asia was substantially increased where Pacific’s role in baby corn seed supply also expanded readily.

1989,             Pacific Seeds became part of ICI Seeds, a leading world biotechnology company.

In 1993,       ICI was demerged into two separate businesses, ICI and Zeneca.   Pacific Seeds became part of Zeneca which is made up of seeds, agrochemical and bioscience units.

In 1996,       Zeneca and Cosun successfully formed the new seed company “ADVANTA”  Advanta is a merger between Zeneca and Van der Have seeds which the new company ranks fifth in the world seed business.

In 1999,       Pacific Seeds has concentrated more efforts on promoting new set of corn hybrids namely Pac 626, Pac 983 and Pac 988  through the model farm program and research trials net work.  The early harvested crops in a number of locations representing major corn areas have shown the farmers’ most satisfaction on the yield performance of the hybrids as well as neighboring farmers who have seen the crop grown.  The sales effort has intensified to bring the hybrids’ differential advantage more visibly to the market.

The new baby corn hybrid, Pac 116 was introduced early this year in Western region.  This hybrid contains high yield potential with the most attractive ear shape.  Pac 116 will increase baby corn volumn not only in western but across country and export business as well.

The new sweet corn hybrid, Hibrix 10 which have proved it high reputation by farmers in Praputhabat, Saraburi as high price sweet corn cobs.  The post harvest quality is also excellent for cannery.  Pacific Seed believes that with the high yield potential together with good quality of Hibrix 10 will expand sweet corn sales in the year to come.

Pacific Seeds has very strong position in sorghum and sunflower which the hybrid often performing better than the industry competitors.  The sales and research strategy is to use benefit on the hybrid advantage to expand volume.  However Pacific Seeds is to work closely with industry users in order to make the crops be required as raw material sources for industry.

In 2000 – 2003

Pacific Seeds has put a lot of efforts on product development for field corn in 2000 toward now. This is to identify superior hybrid corn through on farm trials across corn belt of Thailand. The result in 2002 and 2004 has shown the superiority of Pac984 over leading hybrids in market places. Our focus is to bring the fact information to farmers and dealers in order to expand use of Pac984 in wider areas.

Our sweet corn Hibrix10 has become popular hybrid in fresh and canning segments. Sales has increased sharply since 2000. In 2003, new hybrid namely Hibrix3 have been released for frozen segment and canning segment as well. The high eating quality of this hybrid will enhance the export sale for high quality segment particular in Japan.  The demand of Hibrix 3 was sharply increased by can processor, and this made Hibrix 3 is the “TOP SWEET CORN HYBRID” in Thailand.

A new baby corn hybrid – Pac283 has now performed very outstanding in western territory. The attractive ear shape and high yield potential are important traits that farmers have experienced with it. Pac283 suits to both fresh and canning segment.

Hysun44 a new sunflower hybrids was released in 2002. Pacific Seeds has high confidence on its performance. And Pac44 is expected to be popular hybrid in Thailand  for the following year once farmers have harvested their crop.  We had released Pac 55 in 2003, this is to fullfill the customer demand in sunflower seed market.

2004-2005

Pacific Seeds celebrated its 30th year anniversary on the operation of seed business in Thailand. Promotion programs have arranged to customers specially farmers who purchase Pacific Seeds product. This is to return special incentive back to our customers.

New field corn hybrid namely Pac999 is scheduled to launch as commercial hybrid in 2005. Pac999 has been tested in government trial in the name of Pac903. Pac999 has shown superiority of yield over other hybrids in the trials over 2003 and 2004. This is a good opportunity for Thai’s farmers to plant high yield hybrid to boost their crop yield.

New sweet corn hybrid namely Hibrix12 is scheduled to launch in canned segment. Key features of Hibrix12 are high yield potential with average yield of 15 mt per hectare, cylinder cob, thin pericarp and very sweet (16 degree brix).

Since the early 1990’s Pacific Seeds has an objective to become a major corn players in Thailand land Asia.  This commitment is communicated throughout the organization in all staff level.  The successful in achieving this goal will make Pacific Seed to be most profitable seed company in Thailand and Asia which contributes significant impact to business result of ADVANTA in AAA region.
